Oak Mountain State Park in Alabama

Around 20 miles south of Birmingham, 77 miles north of Montgomery and 63 miles east of Tuscaloosa, is Oak Mountain State Park, the largest state park in Alabama. The park covers about 10,000 acres and is the location of the Alabama Wildlife Center as well as an interpretive center, a BMX track, and plentiful hiking trails. There are opportunities here for plenty of outdoor recreation. With 85 improved and 60 primitive campsites (in addition to backcountry options), this could be the perfect place for you to rent an RV and go on your next vacation.

RV Camping at Oak Mountain State Park

Nestled on the side of Beaver Lake, surrounded by rolling hills and shaded by majestic Longleaf pines, the campground could be a great home-away from home. There are 57 sites with full electric, water and sewer hook-up, and a further 27 suitable for RVs with water and electric hook up. Most of these sites allow for slide-outs, and are, on average, around 40 feet in length though they range between 25 and 60 feet. Most of the sites are back in, though there were a few pull-thru options.

To make a reservation, you can call 205-620-2527 (or make a reservation online). You must call to make a reservation ahead of time. Note that you will need to make a minimum 2 night booking on weekends, and a 3 night reservation for major holidays. On holiday weekends, the site can fill up quickly and you should make reservations at least 3 months in advance.

This could be a great choice of campground for those who love to spend time outdoors in tranquil, natural surroundings. There are plenty of things to so here. In addition to the trails for biking, hiking and horseback riding, there are also opportunities for archery, fishing, falconry, golf, swimming and more.

You can enjoy these from the North Trailhead, and from the beach access parking lot, as well as from the Park Office. There are also plenty of mountain bike trails to enjoy – from the easy Lake trail, to the more challenging 'Blood Rock' option. The 22 mile long 'Red Trail' has been described as one of the 'Hall of Fame Epic Rides' by the International Mountain Bike Association. And after a long day on the trails, you could relax at one of the park's two sandy, lake-side beaches on Double Oak Lake and Beaver Lake.

The Alabama Wildlife Center is one particular highlight of a visit here. This is the oldest and largest wildlife rehabilitation center and educational facility in the state. More than 2000 native birds are rehabilitated and released here each year, from tiny hummingbirds to the world's largest owl species, and huge bald eagles.

Another real gem for animal lovers is the Demonstration Farm. Here, visitors can interact with a range of creatures, including goats, chickens, peacocks, pigs, donkeys, and miniature horses. If you are traveling with kids, they will surely love petting and feeding the animals.
